My husband hates those skimpy, cheap white plates and also hates styrofoam; plastic seems too expensive to use for the whole Pesach. Many brands have corn starch in the coating...

Please let me know if you are aware of regular paper plates that can be used on Pesach.

You know what else they have in the paper goods stores? It's a heavy coated plate that you can wash a few times if you want to, then throw away.

I'm not sure what it's called or how much it is, but it's very nice looking. I think they have white with gold edges even !

from OU Kosher for passover

35. Plates [paper (in the USA only), plastic or styrofoam]

http://oukosher.org/index.php/...../5705

It is a list of non-food items that do not need a hechsher for pesach.

Just a reminder that if you hold by the OU, you should *always* check their book for a list of things that don't require special heckshers, such as certain dish soaps and olive oil (IIRC -- I always carry the book with me to the store). I save a lot of money, AND get better products, that way.

Can someone please cut and paste the article form the OU about the paper plates into here? I've tried several times and can't seem to get in there.

Thank you for pasting the list.

I don't understand why it says paper if many paper plates are know to have starch.

Chinet's products are supervised by the O-K, and the one's that are "Okay" for Pesach have a "P" printed at the five o'clock position beneath the circled k...much easier to find these in your local store when you're already there for things, than having to take time out of your schedule to order paper goods, wait for them to arrive, and pay the postage, too.

I thought there was no concept of batul b'60 when it comes to chometz on Pesach (even though, realistically, we all tolerate with some level of batul)

Paper plates are coated in a very light spray of plastic, sometimes with the addition of highly treated and totally inedible starch. Real starch is expensive and would attract insects. (Edited to add: the starch used is corn starch, meaning that we are talking about the inedible derivative of kitniyos.)
As posters have mentioned, the OU allows all paper plates.

the white cheapo paper plates are not advisable due to starch keeping them separated ... the dixie ones are fine ...

even when paper towels have starch - it's usually only the first & last towel which is glued down - so you should get rid of the first & last 3 sheets

there's a question about styrofoam - but quite frankly I think it's just a hechsher gimik - let's make more monies

next thing you know we'll need heimishe toilet paper for pesach

A couple of yrs ago I ordered 500 paper plates for pesach and then the news came out that they are not advisable. I called a rav and he said, I can use the ones I got.

The issue with styrofoam is actually not a chametz issue, but rather a kashrus one. I don't remember the exact details, though they are brought down in the R' Blumenkrantz book, but something about a non-kosher binding ingredient or something of that sort so it is particularly an issue as they are used for hot things.

Obviously though most poskim do not hold that way since most restaurants and take out places under good hashgacha do use it.
