Quote: | Are we discussing fiction that's presented as fiction, whether based on true events or not, or are we discussing stories about specific real people that are presented as being true but may not be? |
I think that might be the essence of what's bothering me:
If the story is presented as inspirational fiction then, no problem.
But if the story is presented as true, and serves to strenghen a message / prove a point, imo, discovering that it's the product of the imagination of someone defeats the purpose.
For example, a story about a miraculous recovery of someone after giving tzedaka. I don't know, even if the message is a great one, and I believe tzedaka could save people, if I dicovered that the story is made up, it would bother me and make me cynical. It would actually make me question other *true* stories.
