Does it if there are no ingredients other than sugar? I'm interested in fancy forms of baking sugar (larger and smaller granulations that plain old table sugar) but they don't have a hechsher and I don't know if they need or not.

as far as I know, regular granulated sugar does not need but confectinate sugar does.
as a side note, I also think thet flour does not need a heshcher.
but like amother said, check with a rav

I don't have info on specific types of sugar, but here is some info I got from the star-k about products requiring hechsherim:

Quote:

In Europe there are no Hechsherim, you just have to know which companies are ok. I was told by my LOR that any sugar (regular or confectioner's) is ok, as is flour.

Yes, here I've asked about flour and been told it doesn't need a hechsher. I thought that this was the story on plain sugar too, but just wanted to check what others had been told. Thanks, all.

I asked my rav if BREAD flour needs a hechsher. he told me to read him the ingredients, then said yes it does. im prety sure the problem is w/ ascorbic acid.
regular flour does not need a hechsher nor does regular sugar

what about brown sugar (in U.S.)? I just bought safeway brand and I didn't check so carefully, but at first glance I didn't see a hechsher.
(it was on sale, so I just grabbed it and figured if it wasn't good, I'd just return it)
