I am going to my parents and in-laws for y"t (they live a coupla blocks apart) and I always bring something whenever I go. What would you appreciate as a hostess- an extra side dish? dessert?

Ask whether they want a side or a dessert, and let them tell you. Or, if you prefer one over the other, tell them what you'd like to bring.

Well, you can bring wine, which they can always use or save. Or, if you want to make something, make something compact and easy to store and save, like brownies. Then, tell them they can serve them or save them for another time.
