Keeping the etrog till it rots?

DH told me it's either eat the etrog or keep it till it rots and then we can throw it out. Is that what everyone is doing? Neither of us wants to eat it so we have to store it in our home and I don't know where to put it....I don't want it to attract bugs and whatnot...

Yes that's what we're to do also. However, I've done this in the past only for decoration purposes. If you leave it out (not in a bag) it will just dry out. It won't rot or attract bugs. I did this to both an etrog and rimon that I now have sitting with my candlesticks. They just dry out and get hard and are really pretty.

We put cloves in it, let it dry out and use for besamin (smells great). helps to poke the esrog with a skewer to make holes for inserting the whole cloves, then cover as much of the surface as can.

we have a few dried out esrogim in a little potpourri dish that we pass around after the usual bissumim at havdala.

It's hysterical because dh gets the temani ones that are usually huge (although this year's was a runt) and they shrink down to "normal" size and the normal sized ones shrink to little pitzki things!

I throw it out after it dries out only because I feel bad Scratching Head

Ask your LOR if this is ok this year. Ours said b/c of shmitta it wasn't.

I think the shmitta ones have to dry out/rot by rosh chodesh shevat or they have to be sent back to e"y.

I'm waiting to see who starts businesses to send them back to e"y for $$ (there will always be s/o looking for a quick buck!)

We freeze it and then make esrog jam for Tu b'shvat.

if I didn't make esrog jam with it we burned them with the chametz rtogether with teh lulav

Etrogim don't rot, they dry up, and retain their smell. they make great sachets to freshen up draws. My mother used to wait till it dried and them put in the draws with clothes, it always smelled nice.

Unless you keep them in a closed plastic bag, then you bet they become moldy.
