why is it that all jewish cookbooks have onion soup mix in the majority of their recipes (aside from cake)?
can't we come up with other flavors?
I'm going to be daring and start using curry powder.

That's one reason I dislike "Quick & kosher." All onion soup mix I ever found is hydrogenated and full of chemicals.

I also hate all the coffee! Where can I find a decent chocolate cake recipe that doesn't call for coffee! Grrr...

I actually like the flavor onion and chicken soup mixes add. But some good brands have disappeared lately - what happened to Croyden House? Haven't seen it since Pesach.

I see it in recipes here and I don't get it either. It (usually) has MSG and I dislike the taste of it anyways.

I can understand occasionally using it. I love broccoli kugel, and that often has onion soup mix, but it's in every recipe. why, pray tell, does chicken/roast/stuffed cabbage/pasta/etc need onion soup mix? at least it's not in apple pie, but I'm sure someone will manage that soon, too.

I know what you mean!!!
It's an unhealthy shortcut for quick, cheap flavor.
I just made a broccoli kugel with lots of onion powder, freshly ground pepper and salt instead of the onion soup mix.
It was delicious. Next time, I'll keep track of how much I put in and I'll post the recipe.

gamzu, I'd love to hear of interesting spice combinations, I'm getting bored of my usual spices. I need to get some new additions to my spice rack.

I also dislike cooking using recipes from kosher cookbooks. An obscene amount of margarine, white flour and sugar....Add to this canned this and canned that...
Are we even eating Real food anymore?

When I make lentil soup I add curry and a splash of balsamic vinegar--It smells like a restaurant when I am cooking the soup! YUM!

I stopped using onion soup mix since it has MSG. Does anyone know if there's a brand out there without MSG? My chicken cholent just aint the same without it!
