What is the origin of this name? I heard once that it's the Russian form of Moshe, but I'm not sure if that's correct or not. What other versions are there?

Sasha is a Russian nickname for Alexander.

It is unisex, it is a the same nickname for both Alexander and Alexandra.

In America I heard it used as a stand-alone name, but only for girls!

Growing up all the Sasha's I knew were men. It's Russian for Alex (Alexander). Only more recently have I noticed people starting to name girls that. I think it's pretty either way.

Yes, out of Russia it is only recently that it has become a girl name.

In/around Russia it always was unisex, think of the wife of reb Nachman who was a Sasha too.

Diminutive for Alexander...like Sashinka, Alik, Alec...I am an expert, it's my husband's name... Wink

I think amongst Jews it was familiar for Sarah, not Alexandra. E.g. Reb Levi Yitzchak ben Sarah Sosha of Berditchev.

Sosha and Sasha are the same?

I have a Sosha in my family but figured it was a different name. Anyone know the story there?

I'm just speculating here, but I think Sosha originated with Sarah. I don't think Sasha, as short for Alexandra, was historically used by Jews in Russia.

Btw, there are other names that in Russian are diminutive but somehow became established amongst Jews as names on their own. Possibly they were originally used as the diminutive form of Jewish names as well. E.g. Masha is in Russia short for Maria, Mariasha is Marianna, Genya/Henya is Yevgenia etc. Even Moussia, which we know as a variation of Mushka, is short for Maroussia, which is itself a variation of Maria.
