My uncle, Sheldon Goldstein (Shmuel Leib ben Nosson v'Esther) was niftar last night. I'm at my father's home waiting for the funeral. Uncle Sheldon had Down Syndrome. He always lived with loving family, in the Bronx, Queens and Eretz Yisrael. He was 66. In his lifetime, he managed to learn to care for himself, and care for others. He learned to travel, read and vote. He volunteered in the community and made many friends. We will always love him.

Oh, that's so sad. But he sounds like a wonderful and special guy. What a zechus to have him as an uncle. May he be a meilitz yosher for all of Am Yisrael (undoubtedly he will continue to help others where he is). May Hashem give you all nechama. Baruch Dayan HaEmes.

Thanks so much, imamothers. We told the rav our stories and in an hour he will conduct the levaya.

During his first visit to Israel, my uncle wrote this poem. People with mental disabilities cannot intellectualize on the level of the average person, but we all share the same emotions.

Land of Love

by Sheldon Goldstein

This is a far land of love
What can I say about Israel?
People live here in Israel
It is in our hearts and in our soul
Forevermore.

Looking at people, that is what I see
They are in our hearts
Forevermore

I see an old man
And also I see an old woman
You could cry in your heart

Let’s not forget our Rabbis
That we love so much

And let’s not forget our kinder and our maidels
They always will be in our hearts
And in our soul
To be loved always

Please just listen what we say
Listen to the sound of pray
Come in with us to our synagogue
And pray with us
Together as one

And open up your heart
And you will know inside of you

Look up in the sky and you will see lights
The golden stars of Israel
Of love
Forevermore

What a special story - I hope it gives you all some nechama. And it also shows what an incredible family, to be able to give him a fulfilling life when bringing him up over 60 years ago, when so many of the treatments/ knowledge/ acceptance by society was not available as it is today.

Wow, Isramom, I can't believe that Sheldon Goldstein was your uncle! A while back somebody, and I can't figure it out right now!, sent me some pictures and an outline of a writeup of Sheldon Goldstein, for my magazine. I have not published it, yet. And now Uncle Sheldon is gone! Baruch Dayan Haemes.
What did he die of? I am so curious.
May he be a maylitz yosher for the entire family. I am sure the memories of life with Sheldon will warm your hearts and souls forever.
