I don't know about being necessary, but I didn't because my dh bought it the day I had to leave the hospital.

I don't think it's necessary, but if it comes off easily, why not?

Pineapple, that's even worse than leaving it as is. Lysol? On a place a baby will lay his head?

All such wipes (Clorox, whatever) are harsh chemicals, and you are soaking the material with it. Weird that a nurse told you to do it.

Do you wipe down a brand new toilet seat? Unless the company writes ‘not tested on animals” I would assume humans, then LOL I would scrub it down.
I don’t’ see why a car seat cover has to be washed first, especially if the infant isn’t laying on it stark naked. Everything else, undershirts, etc. I wash because it goes directly on the body.

Car seat covers are treated with certain chemicals to make them flame retardant. It is really a judgment call by the parents to choose their 'safety priority'.
Wash the seat cover to remove the chemicals because of a fear of carcinogenic and expose the child to increased risk on life threatening burns in the event of an accident
or
Expose the child to possible carcinogens on a regular basis but have increased protection for baby in the event of an accident.

I don't wash anything else; why would I was a carseat cover?
Anyway, like many others, with DS#1 the carseat was picked up on the way to picking us up at the hospital. I washed it before I put it away, and brought it up to air out a few days before DS#2 arrived.

That is so interesting, justanothermother. I never thought of it that way. (I compulsively wash everything.)

I hated washing them when they were dirty they are so hard to take apart so why would I want to do it when it was brand new and clean?
