sometimes bringing presents backfired on me.
I once brought a bag of taffies to a family & subsequently discovered they are health food nuts & never bring sugar in their house. oops.
I brought the same bag of taffies to another family. the woman berated me for not bringing a good enough hechsher. I had been under the impression eida hachareidis was good enough for everybody. apparently not.
the next time, I resolved to bring a non food item. so I brought flowers to a family with really allergic kids.
three strikes & I was out. after that, I just offered to help in any way I could & thanked my hosts profusely before I left.
