She is all over-in all publications. She is educated in kids that are lacking social skills, acedemic skills....

I only went to her once. She had some useful suggestions, but it was not for reading or social skills. I didn't really benefit, but maybe others did.

I see her ads and stuff all over, I'm curious what it is she DOES that's so hot, or if she's just trying to sound special but is really doing the same stuff as the rest of us. Not that there's anything wrong with that, I just want to know if I can be special too or if there's some secret Wink

I had a very bad experience with her about a year ago. I needed help for my special needs child and found her to be extremely unprofessional

That's my question, is she really that special or she just advertises all over the place. Do any of you would know someone else that could to a good evaluation about some reading issues with a big boy?

I just want to point out that she isn't a therapist.

I am not looking for a therapist, looking for someone that could tell me if my son has any learning disability. Is she licensed?

If you are looking for an evaluation, please call your local Board of Education. They are required by law to provide this service for no charge.

Yes, Marina, but with the DOE you just have to kind of trust whoever they send to do the evaluation. For all I know, they might be fine, but I just have no way of knowing. Whereas reading specialists are practically a dime a dozen in Brooklyn, and I'm sure you can easily get a referral to someone competent. Not that I object to going the DOE route, just saying I could see why someone might prefer a personal referral.

User, for a formal diagnosis of learning disabilities you'd need an educational psychologist. A M.Ed, like me and this Schonfeld, can assess whether the child has a reading problem, which skills need work, and other related factors that could be helpful for intervention, but we could not give a diagnosis. If you're looking to get services funded by the Dept of Ed, you need the diagnosis.

I am not necessarily interested to get funded by the government. I just someone that is experienced with kids to tell me if he has a reading issue or its a vision issue. I don't know if she's the kind of person that would be honest enough that if it doesn't belong to her she would tell me or she's is a "I can do it all" kind of person.

There's a place in Boro Park that doesn't vision therapy (it's free, I believe). They could probably tell you. I hear great things about it.

You would have to get an evaluation by a developmental opthalmologist or developmental optometrist to rule out vision issues first. Then, if they tell you there are no vision issues or that the vision issues alone don't account for the difficulties, you go to a reading specialist for a reading-specific evaluation. But the only way to know if a reading issue is just that, is to rule out other causes.
