when you give someone your e-mail address - do you think it's right for them to give it out to others - including but not limited to businesses ???

I think it depends. Def. NOT to a business, but if one friend asked another for my email, it's a lot more reasonable in my mind than giving out my phone #.
You can always ignore an email.

She just said that people had been giving out her e-mail and she didn't like it, so it doesn't sound theoretical to me.
Again, as other posters mentioned, no to businesses but to a mutual friend who needs it, I might.
