I have pretty poor vision and no talent whatsoever at facial recognition, so I smile and say hi to almost every frum woman I pass (it helps to be OOT, I don't know what I would do in NY.) I get some puzzled faces sometimes, mostly lukewarm hi-s back, but I have never gotten questioned like that.

I greet people by mistake thinking I know them once in a blue while so if someone I don't think I know greets me I greet back-people make mistakes but it's ok to reciprocate to greeting another human.
