I have a very boring assortment of spices. basically garlic powder, onion powder, seasoning spice, cinnamon, salt and pepper
I'd like to try out some new flavors, but I hate buying a whole container of a spice just to use it for one little sprinkle on a rare dish.
so can you suggest some interesting spices that can be used frequently? (on chicken, in pasta, rice...)
thanx!

I third the oregano and parika, I will also add rosemary. All three are great for chicken, soups, any italian style dishes (pasta, spaghetti, lasagna, pizza etc.) While you're at it, if your family is into those foods throw in basil too. Have fun!

Personally I prefer my rosemary, basil and mint to be fresh and not dried.
I also find rosemary to be very strong so I tend to go easy on it.

mrs. dash, basil, oregano, regular paprika and hungarian (a bit hotter).
I make a great baked potato dish. I cube potatoes and onion. add salt, pepper, garlic, onion powder, paprika, and basil and olive oil. Bake covered for over an hr and an then uncovered until crispy. Yum!
I also previously posted my garlic chicken with oregano, let me know if I should repost it.

I know, sometimes I'll follow a recipe that calls for fresh herbs and I have to go out of boro park to the chinese stores to find them.

No fresh herbs don't need a hechsher but no one here will buy them without since imho they're too lazy to check them. Our grocery doesn't even sell whole heads of cabbage except during yom tov when everyone needs to make stuffed cabbage (we have to pay about 4 dollars for a small package of preshredded from Bodek) Sorry if that was harsh, Im frustrated by this...I really wish the grocery would carry these things but no one will buy it from them
IMO if rabbonim issue a warning about some bug in a vegetable then I just make sure to check for it...example, recently the celery worm scare, so I check the celery! I found on two stalks some worms inside and I threw them out, big deal, but other women have now completely cut out celery from their kitchens...absurd in my view.
I dont know exactly where the nearest non jewish market is in order to buy these things...I could ask my dh but see its such a hassle...

Mint and basil are VERY easy to grow on your own... SO are chives.
If you have a house, or a fire escape to keep a larger pot, rosemary bushes are very hardy plants and take little effort.

greenfire, if you plan on going to scarborough fair anytime soon, I'd appreciate if you picked up one of each spice on your list. I could really use some more spices. and a cambric shirt, of course.
