so dd found a ring ... put up a sign at school ... in the interim she lost it ... now she thinks she has to pay ... what do you think ...
it was lost anyways - so I say no
she most certainly didn't borrow it

why on earth should she have to pay? at most she was a shomeret chinam, if that. as you say, the original owner lost it anyway, so dd hasn't caused her any additional loss, and in any case IIRC a shomer chinam doesn't pay.

well the person who lost it came to her in school ... and now my dd feels badly like it's her fault ... I say if she didn't find it - the owner most certainly never would've since the school is cleaned every day ... believe me my dd lost enough of her own stuff that has never been found ... the ring is tiny - I wonder if it's in the house somewhere ...
