I was recently discussing this with a friend who was telling me about her neighbour who has something like this and I realized I know a some people like this. We were wondering if the kids get teased by their classmates or if it's really no big deal. I am not using the examples we know of but I am talking about names like Zahava Goldberg or even Goldie Goldstein, Avi Abraham, Yitzchak Isaacs, etc. Would you avoid using them?

I've heard of this...usually sefardim who have surnames that are first names eg efraim, Shlomo etc. In such a case the surname is probably becasue of an ancestor with that name, I imagine, so there is a reason to give that name to your child.

I am talking specifically about first names and last names not 2 names that mean the same thing. Like if there is a girl named Zahava Gold will kids call her to tease her Gold Gold? (Why can I imagine boys doing that more than girls?)

Raisin, I don't think any of the people I know are sephardi who do this.

I know a Meir Meyer....and an Avraham Abraham.

Yes, it's "cute" and people may want to avoid giving a name like that for certain "obvious" reasons but honestly--if I had a first name as a "last name" and had a relative to name for that's pressing. I think I'd still give the name.

I don't think ppl would make fun of ppl with the same last name.
if I would have a name like that and its named after person that I know
I wouldn't avoid it. I would name it.

what about Esther Stern? Sterna Stern? both exist.
With my husband we would totally do crazy stuff like that if we didn't have people to name for. His surname means moon, mine star. We joked endlessly of Luna Moon or Sterna Moon LOL

I think that Zahava Gold is cute.
But otherwise, I think it's very tacky. I know a Daniel Daniel. And we would never name our son Levy (it's our last name).

That would be RAV Mendel Hendel, no? And he's really Menachem Mendel, but doesn't use his full name. (If it's the person I'm thinking of.)

I think he is a rav, yes. Too bad he's not just Mendel, then my example isn't so fun anymore.
