If you can get your hands on the Tom Hanks mini-series John Adams I HIGHLY recommend it although it's obviously not fiction. But the acting, costumes, scenery are just first rate. (It won over 30 various awards, including 4 Golden Globes and a bunch of Emmys).

Marie Antoinette - I wasn't o impressed with this but others were.

The Other Boleyn Girl - I havent watched it but it's one of my favouriute books.

Exodus - very long. Pity you don't live in the UK, I'd lend it to you.

Pride and Prejdice, Sense and Sensibility, any Jane Austen, though the aforementioned come recommended - haven't watched any others.

Les Miserables - doesn't fit your eras, and you have to like musicals, but I think it's amazing. I'd really recommend watching it live tho...

Great Expectations

Shakespeare in Love - very romantic, I feel cheesy to like it Smile

Sorry bout the speelling errors, I'm typing this with one hand...

Happy Watching!

I second John Adams (starring Paul Giamatti; Tom Hanks was the producer).

The Jane Austen stories are good, too. Including Becoming Jane, which is a biography of Jane. The most recent Pride and Prejudice is great, Emma is excellent. I've seen more but can't remember at the moment.

BTW, Ken Burns has a series of documentaries that are also first rate. My husband and I have seen Baseball, we're in the middle of watching The Civil War and he's seen The Wild West.

They are superbly done.. from the narration, to the photography, to the historians telling the history.
