I always wanted to ask this question. In Chumash Devarim 27-8, rashi, it is clear that the Torah was supposed to be translated into 70 languages already right after they entered EY. So why was targum shivim such a tragedy then?

It is compared to the Egel (Golden Calf), I forgot that part in the post you quoted. There's a comparison brought (I wish I remembered where!) of the Calf vs the Cherubim and the Septuagint vs Moshe's translation. I'll look for it.

I'm guessing because it was a symbol of religious persecution?
