We are not from N America, now living in Canada, and are regularly attending, B"H, friends simchas, including Weddings and Barmitzvahs. We are never sure if our monetary gifts are considered too little or too much?
What is the average amount given for a Barmitzvah and a wedding?

depends on several factors... the ain ones being-
what financial bracket are you? (don't go broke over this)
How close are you to chosson/kllah - what's your connection?
Wedding denominations tend to be- $18, 20, 36, 50, 54, 75, 100, 150 etc.

some people wait to see how fancy the affair is, and tailor their gift accordingly. I am personally opposed to this, as a simcha is not a restaurant, you are not "paying" for your meal, and just b/c someone decides to make a bigger or lesser splash is no reason to be more or less generous than we originally intended to be. We usually base our decision on how close we are to the baal hasimcho, what is their financial position (we are less generous to ppl who have money than we are to people who don't), and what is our financial position at the time.

We do the same as Chen. Good friends fet more. We tend to give $25-$36 for a Bar Mitzvah & $36-$50 for a wedding.
