If you were suddenly transported back to life in the 1800s, what do you think you'd miss most from your current life?

I think I'd miss things like antibiotics, but otherwise that lifestyle really appeals to me.

well, if I was a wealthy woman with maids to do all the work, the thing I would miss most would probably be books and intellectual stimulation. Assuming of course, I was lucky enough to be taught how to read.

if I was poor I would miss: having enough food, heat, adequate shelter, clean clothes, hot water for bathing. being hungry would probably be the hardest to bear. I guess you can get used to being dirty especially if everyone else is.

oh, a lot!

computer/internet.

library/easy availabilty of reading materials.

ease in household chores

availibility of food/frozen products

as others have mentioned: bathroom and shower issues.
air conditioning/heating. cars and planes for ease of travel.

These are just the tip of the iceberg. I think I would love to visit as I enjoy history but no more than a visit.

I'd probably miss my washing machine the most, as well as mode of communication like email, telephones, cell phones, etc.

The other stuff I can see myself enjoying, for the most part. (But I assume the novelty would wear off in time.)

Modern medicine.

Don't know if I would manage to have kids, and if I did, I might very well die in childbirth.

We spent a week on a farm last year and I have never felt so free and so alive in my life. I think it's how life was meant to be lived. You are constantly exerting your body so I don't think you have that much time to feel bored, you work alongside your family, eat fresh food that comes from your own two hands and by evenings you can read by candlelight. And the best part is that G-d is obvious in everything you do.

I do appreciate indoor plumbing though.

IF you were taught to read. And as a farmers daughter you probably wouldn't be. Even a farmers son.

But if you think you could cope with that, then great. And as Cat said, you would very possible die in childbirth at some point. (I know I gave birth 5 times pretty much as they did in 1800 but didn't you have c sections?)

That's why my first answer was modern medicine.

And trust me, I'd know how to read. I taught myself when I was 4.

the only thing that would be nice is living near all your friends and family, you were much more likely to do that in those days.

when in 1800s are we talking about? 1800 or 1890?

I just randomly chose the 1800s. Replace that with 1700 if you will. I just meant before modern technology took over.
