For years I've heard about this book, which apparently is out of print and difficult to find. How can I get my hands on a copy?

IIRC Black Becomes a Rainbow was written by a South AFrican woman whose daughter became BT. She describes her experiences. She herself did not become frum, I think.

It's too bad Black Becomes a Rainbow isn't in print anymore. I'd love for my mom to read it. It was interesting and helpful for me to see things from her viewpoint.

Do you mean Black BECOMES a Rainbow?
I don't know if we should get off on a tangent but there was one thing that gave me pause, and that was the rush to have the chasuna even though a not to terrible delay would have meant having her whole family. I had a longer engagement so my sisters could have their babies comfortably in advance (especially important to me since one sister had an even longer engagement so we could all be out of aveilus by then).

I thought Black Becomes a Rainbow was a great book for showing the perspective of the relatives of a BT, but the daughter's attitude rubbed me the wrong way. Its from the mother's POV, so maybe that's why, but the way she screams at her mother for doing this or that...if I wasn't frum this would totally turn me off.

I read it years and years ago but I remember there was a lot of criticism about the daughters behaviour. Maybe it's a good book for BT's how not to behave! the mother must have been a terribly understanding person.

that is true. I remember she gave her mom a hard time about broccoli. I think that's why my mom would like it, however, because it really does give a mother's perspective. It must be really hard to be in that position.

it was how the daughter behaved and her general attitude. Not kavodik at all.

Remember, though, that it is from the mom's POV. We really don't know all the factors that went into the various decisions she made, all the times she kept quiet and dealt with things differently or in ways her mom didn't even know about....

Two minor corrections: She is from Australia, and the blow up was about parsley. Wink
