My guest for Shabbos is on a restricted diet: only whole grains, nothing fried, no mayonnaise, no nuts, among other things. Usually when he comes I make baked brown rice as a side dish, but he only called us late this evening and I have no brown rice in the house (besides which I'm sick of baked brown rice already.) I have some whole grain spiral pasta in the house and would like to make a hot side dish out of it. Any ideas??

No, unfortunately the guest is also not allowed to eat red meat.

I've made noodle kugel out of whole wheat spiral noodles. just cook em first, then proceed as usual.

Yes. Nor can I fry cabbage, so I can't do the cabbage with noodles (I had thought of that and I even have already-fried cabbage in the freezer.) I also can't roast potatoes if I do it with oil.

Now, I love mashed potatoes. How do I keep them fluffy and fresh till seuda time? And any ideas for gravy that don't involve fried onions?

My family doesn't like noodle kugel and I can't see going through the patchke for something they won't touch.

This recipe is always a hit:

• 1 lb pasta
• 1 hot pepper, crushed
• 1/2 cup olive oil
• 4 garlic cloves, minced
• 1/2 cup breadcrumbs (optional)
1. Saute garlic and pepper in oil until golden brown. Add bread crumbs and blend well. Toss in pasta cooked to al dente and serve.

(They make whole wheat bread crumbs, and I usually just sprinkle red pepper flakes in lieu of crushing a hot pepper.)

I was going to say something similar to Ashrei.

It may not fit the op's requirements, but it fits the title of the thread.

Fry flavored or plain bread crumbs in a little oil. Stir them often till dark brown.

Toss over cooked pasta.

When I served them, I poured chicken gravy over them and it was delicious.

why not just cook the pasta and toss it with spiced crushed tomatoes from a can? heat up the tomatoes and add salt, pepper, oregano, basil, whatever. it's basic and yummy. and it's generally kid friendly.

Make sure your WW pasta is really WW. Lots of times it's partial.

ww farfel... there's a recipe on this site for baked farfel.. about 60 sec prep time, bit over an hour in the oven and delicious

http://www.imamother.com/forum.....arfel

edit: just realized that you only have ww spirals in the house... but if you have access to farfel- this is really quick and easy.

I actually made my own whole-wheat farfel for when this gentleman comes to visit, but when I took out the bag last night I saw that the whole thing had fallen apart into tiny crumbs.

I think I'll try pasta in marinara sauce. It sounds like the easiest thing I can do without frying anything. I just wish I had a sauce that didn't include tomato. Tomato sauce feels so unShabbosdik to me.

My mom used to make a dish for friday night with pasta. She used small cut up grilled vegetables, and the sauce was mostly soy sauce (I'm not sure the rest though) I loved it!

another idea- I posted this somewhere else, similar to above though
pasta-cooked
cut up boneless chicken into bite size pieces
cut up any veggies-onions, zuccini's, peppers...
1T oil
1T garlic power
1T soy sauce
cover and put in oven for about an hour.

Now that's what I was looking for. I think I'll make it without the chicken, but the veggies sound good. Now I just have to get dh to pick up some for me. Thanks!
