I would like to add barley and brown rice to my very basic cholent (meat onions potatoes) but my husband doesn't like when its al mixed together.
I was told that I could put them into bags and then add the bags to the cholent
ok so here goes my questions:
for both of them
-do you cook/brown them before?
-do you add water to the bags?
-do you add s pices to the bags or they take the taste of the meat?
-what type of bags should I use?
-do you poke the bags to let the air out??

you can get rice already in bags. I think it's called Success rice. you just add it to the bubbling cholent.

you could get a garnish bag/cheesecloth bag. that should work. but I would check with a rav to see if there's an issue of borer. I would check about the quick rice bags too.

you also need a hechsher on a cheesecloth bag, iirc.

you can use crockpot bags. specially made bags to put the whole cholent in. You can also use parchment paper and wrap the barley in it to keep it separate. Enjoy, all types of food sound delicious to me right now!

you can use foil too, but you have to make sure some liquid gets inside.

You can use the landau's bags. Add LOTS of extra water to the pot, but also keep babysitting it to see if it didn't go down too much. Don't forget the garlic!

so I guess I would use the crock pot bags or cheese cloth if I could find it
but what about my other questions: do I add water/spices to the bags? and should I cook or brown everything before?
just btw I"M HUNGRY!!!

If you use something like a crockpot bag (anything sealed) you'll need to add an appropriate amount of water and seasonings for the item and quantity of it in the bag as it won't absorb anything from the cholent.
If you use cheesecloth or a cheesecloth bag, you don't need to use anything, just make sure you have plenty of liquid in the cholent for it to absorb as well as what the cholent itself needs.

I always rinse cheesecloth before using. No, don't cook it before as long as it has liquid (either in it's own bag or in the cholent itself) to absorb as it cooks.

actuaaly garlic is the ONLY spice I use in my cholent (besides for salt and sometimes little pepper) and I always comes out YUMMM!!!!

I soak rice/wheat beforehand so the kernels are already plump.
That way you don't have to add too much liquid in the pot.
I also put them on top of the beans/meat so it doesn't get too mushy. (less of an issue if you use wheat berries)
Aside from garlic, don't forget lots of sauteed onions!

didnt get a chance to find cheesecloth bag fr this past shabbos but iy"h will for next shabbos!!
and yes Mrs Bissli fried onions are the best!!!
