has anyone done research in the Jerusalem area of the cheapest place to buy:
school supplies?
school books?
Backpacs/pencil cases?
Any input is appreciated. Thanks!

I used to buy everything in sifrei Geula but it is a major balagan. Books you can order from Tamir by phone and they will package it up and even send it but never by notebooks, etc in a place like that. Look at the ads, everyone and their mother will be having back to school sales.
Also look in L'Inyan and similar for institution and home sales.
Do not by a junky, el cheapo backpack. it will die quickly and your child's back will suffer.
Book prices are the same everywhere, the stores make their money on the supplies.
If you really want to save money do not go for the notebooks with the fancy colors, just plain ole' dafron.

I got nothing in the mail and my dd is starting Gan in school this year. She is going into 3-4 year old gan. Will she need things? What do the schools typically ask you to bring?

She will need a "tik", a sandwich each day, and a drink if you wish, but the drink is not really neccesary.

We used to get the notes about gan starting about 2 days before. Do you know which gan? Because we didn't even know that - there are more than one gan for each age group here.
They usually send out a little card on around the 29th or 30th of August  telling you when and where to be. Gan starts 1st September.

The Beis Yaakov system (and ganim) go from Sept. 1st - June 30.
In the ganim, I have found that they don't like for you to send drinks b/c they provide in the gan.
If it makes y'all feel better, there is so much politics here in Beitar, my dd going into 3 yr. old gan AND my dd going into 1st grade, haven't even been ACCEPTED yet .
