I dont like using onion soup mix b/c of the chemicals/msg, whatever they have in there and it's often an ingredient in kugels, etc. Anyone successfully subsitiuted other spices instead of using it? I'm thinking lots of onion powder, garlic powder and salt? thx

this has come up in other threads I think. I use 2TBSP dehydrated onion flaked and a tsp salt in place of 2TBSPS onion soup mix. you can add more salt if necessary after tasting .

FYI, Lieber's brand makes onion soup mix without MSG. It comes in a yellow can with a red lid.

Depending on the recipe, either I just add extra salt, or extra spices like garlic powder, onion powder and salt.
But if it's a simple recipe that relies heavily on the soup mix, I add lots of sauteed onions (sauteed on a very low flame for an hour. - I like to make a lot at a time, and freeze in little ziplock bags for easy use.)

thanks so much for the proportions.. that's what I wasn't sure of really.
And the sauteed onions sounds YUM, but I'll have to see if I have time for that. Thanks all for responding so quickly.. Broccoli kugel, here I come!!

This is similar to Homemade Dry Onion Soup Mix, but without the beef bouillon. It is great for casseroles, meat dishes and crockpot meals that call for a packet of instant dry onion soup mix.

1 1/2 teaspoons dried parsley
1 teaspoon onion powder
1 teaspoon turmeric
1/2 teaspoon celery seed

This looks great, thanks for posting!
Do you know how many tablespoons of soup mix are in a packet? Is this full recipe a sub for 1 packet? (I see that it comes out to a little more than 4 Tbsp of spices.)

the recipe says it is a sub for a packet. I normally use it in making things like onion soup potatos and brocolli kugel, and it works well.
