HELP!!!

We just had our third child in three years and I can't figure out bedtime. I really need help. I used to rock my son in the rocking chair and then put him in the crib. He's 1. At the same time (8:00 PM), my husband would put our daughter to sleep in our bedroom. She's 2. Now my husband NEEDS to be here to help me put them to bed - YIKES! How do I do this with a newborn and the other two WITHOUT my husband?

P.S. How do I get my brain back? (Just kidding)

I hope this doesn't go against the rules and regulations, but why must they all go to sleep at the exact same time?

I might rock the 1 year old, while letting the 2 yr old stay up a bit longer, and when 1 yr. old falls asleep, put the two year old to bed. Or maybe the opposite. And perhaps the very first thing would be to nurse the newborn, and then take care of the others, so you don't have the baby screaming.

Could you maybe get a local girl to come in for an hour or so? I used to have a different girl every night, just to give me another pair of hands. I always did the actual putting to bed and comforting myself, though. Now my big ones help me with the smaller ones so it's a lot easier, B"H. Smile

how long does the 1 year old have to be rocked for? and can he only fall asleep by being rocked? try putting him to bed 20 minutes earlier to buy yourself time with the 2 year old. I just started putting my 1 yr old to sleep at 7:40 instead of 8 and she's actually sleeping later in the morning as a result.

do you nurse the newborn to sleep? if you put the newborn to bed last, will he/she cry while waiting to be fed? if not, I'd take care of the baby last because they dont need to be on such a strict schedule at that age. and adapt the best to changes.

good luck! I only have one so my advice might be totally off the wall, but I'm just trying to imagine...

I agree that the best thing to do would prob be to find someone to help u at bed time if your husband cant be there... that must be so hard! putting three to bed alone...

How about putting on a tape for the two year old, while you rock the one year old. I recently saw an advertisement in the Parents Magazine for a "crib rocker". It's a small device that you attach to the crib, which vibrates and gives a rocking motion.

Thank you so much for the ideas - perhaps I should have a girl come over. That's a great idea. Or I could try a video for my oldest daughter. I just hope our three-week old son doesn't wake up during the whole thing. I don't know how women do this...

I realized shortly after #2 was born that children have to learn to put themselves to sleep. Mommy is not superman, and cannot be in three places at once. I learned the hard way with #1, I rocked him to sleep till about 16 months, when #2 was born, I could not do it anymore. We had a three day scream-a-thon at bedime, but he soon learned to sooth himself to sleep.

With #2 and #3, I took advice from a parenting magazine, I never put them into thier cribs when they were fully asleep. I always made sure they were awake, yet tired. These two barely cried when they got older and had to go to bed by themselves. The key to your problem is to start with the baby who is young enough to have this work on her/him.

You will have to use the scream meathod with the other two. It may take a few weeks, but once they learn it will be much easier for you.

I also do what mummy3.5 does.
since DS was a few weeks old we fed him and then before he fell asleep we put him in his cot so he got used 2 winding down and falling asleep on his own. it paid off big time cos even if he wakes up in the middle of the night he knows how 2 settle himself back 2 sleep.
