My aunt did the sign language with her son and it really worked out for her.

I used it with my youngest. We still use it in fact. It's been a lifesaver. She can tell me when she's hungry, thirsty for milk or water, wants to nurse, etc. She's also learned several other signs so when we're reading a story with a kitty she signs kitty. Or when we take a walk and see an airplane, she signs airplane. OK, so not so useful, but she seems to be thrilled to be able to communicate with us. Smile

I used to live in an apartment complex opposite a deaf couple. It was really cute to see their son sitting on the porch signing to them at 8 or 9 months old!

I have sort of been trying this and have learned a bunch of signs and although my son is definitely amused and interested to watch me do them he really has not shown any move toward making them himself. I might not be teaching them correctly with enough consisstnecy and starting with the signs he can really understand though.

Defiitely try it since if it works it is great.

I've seen little kids using it- it really reduces frustration, because they can make themselves understood using signs far before they can speak. A family I know that uses it told me that most importantly, you should say the word and do the sign at the same time.

A real winner: MORE! Very Happy

Some other key words:
-Hungry
-Thirsty
-Yes
-No
-Crib
-Out

I am confused, is this sign language "for fun" of out of necessity?

It's neither for fun nor a need, really.

The theory is that kids get frustrated by their inability to communicate properly, and that they can learn to sign much earlier than they can learn to talk.

From what I've seen, it works, and the whole idea makes a lot of sense.

It's not a substitute for learning to speak, but makes life a lot easier until they can!

How can I start learning sign language to teach to my baby?
Anyone aware of any resources out there?

hisorerus, thank you for explaining.
still have some questions though: how old should the baby be when starting to teach him/her, and where can I find info on the subject - any idea?
