how many minutes should a newborn breastfeed? How do you know your child is eating enough?

it depends, some newborns feed for about 45 minutes per side!
Do you have a lactation consultant or a midwife to help you?

...and some are ok with 20 minutes in total and sometimes will change their eating patterns. Is your baby gaining weight? and filling diapers normally? Does your baby seem content in between meals (although this isn't the best indicator)

More important than the length of time of the feed are the following:

1) how is your baby's latch? are the baby's lips phlanged out (I.e. like a fish mouth, turned out)? If the baby is hurting you, clicking a lot, or unable to get a good latch, it won't matter how long the feed is because the baby won't be able to get milk.

2) How is the baby's suck? Can you tell when the baby is actively sucking milk (slower, more rhythmic suck and you should hear the baby swallowing) vs. "flutter" sucking?

3) The baby should have at least 6-8 wet diapers a day and at least a couple poops a day and not appear sallow.

Lots of newborns want to nurse for a very long time. This is normal and OK. They are working to bring in your milk and establish your supply, and they also need the comfort and closeness of nursing and skin-to-skin contact. They don't wear watches LOL so they don't know when they're supposed to be "finished."

If you are getting very sore or are worried the baby isn't getting enough, maybe we can help you figure out if there's an issue with the latch or the suck. If you have a La Leche League leader in your area, she will be more than happy to assist you as well. PM me if you need more info. Kol tuv and Mazal tov!
