A friend told me.....................
Amazing how our kids change our vocabulary! Mine both called spaghetti "pissketti" and I still call it that.

when my now 6 year old first started talking she used to ask for her fave sandwhich , bread with butter as shembutter . We still call it that, although now I correct her , it's about time she speaks like a 6 yr. old.

Yes, my son came home once from preschool and told us, "We went to Morah K's [the science morah] room and the hamster had babies and they were BISGUSTING! " He was so delighted. We still call things "bisgusting" around here.
Over the years we've gotten food from the "tigerator" in the "chiken" and read "mazagines" too...

When my oldest asked for her "blankie' the first time, it came out "kiki." Now all the kids have kikis. They don't even know what a "blanket" is.

Are you sure you're not my family? LOL MY first and third had a kiki too. I think they catch the last syllable of blankie, and jus say it twice

We speak some Hebrew in our house. Marak is soup and our oldest called it moooyak when she was little. Now we usually call it moooyak.

We were once passing a "tiflah" (non jewish house of worship) and heard the chimes. My son's ears perked up and he asked very curiously "What's that?''. I answered him"a non jewish zach"(something non jewish ). My son said "Oh, a non jewish nacht!"( a non jewish night). From then on, we referred to all things related as "a non jewish nacht"!
Interesting SaraG, we also served "pisghetti" for a long time, and had it with "chekup" too!
By us, for the longest time, the "pulke" of the chicken was called a "chicken lolly". (I wrapped it with a napkin, and they ate it like a lolly...).
The cutest "mistakes" are how the little ones sing the words of niggunim, till they learn how to read.. Atah V'chartonu...instead of v'shimcha hagadol v'hakadosh my son used to say shimcho hagadol beis hamikdosh oleinu karoso".

SaraYehudis- your last story reminds me of how every time im saying the 12 psukim with my kids, after the second one- Shema-, my almost 3 year old decides the next pasuk should be "Ach Tzadikim." (because its part of davening too)
and he calls "pickles" "kipples"

We have "madagets" (magnets) on our fridge and we snap pictures with the "cramera." We have "eggies" for breakfast and "noonals" and "cumbers" for lunch.

When we were asking parsha questions this last Shabbos, we asked, "What was in the korban a woman accused of adultery had to bring?" and my 7 year old answered, "Cauliflower!"...meaning of course barley flour!

I really try to stay away from it, but sometimes the words they use are just so funny, we have a "amazum" "firstuball" and "bekist" (amazing, first of all, and breakfast).

In France most children specialists say it's not good to make them get used to using non real words, and that they'll mature more rapidly if you talk to them "like an adult". My parents never used "kids words" with me and never "simplified" sentences so I learned many words, and I have to say I always was very good with language. I plan to do the same with my future kids.

My parents told me the same thing with my kids. We try not to use the words they say & we correct them instead. Except for their nicknames. They started because someone couldn't pronounce something.

At the end of the day, it's really not such a big deal. We had some funny words in my house, and we still use them sometimes, but don't worry, no one goes to the chuppah still using those words.
And, by the way, correcting children's pronunciation or grammar is considered by most linguists to be a completely futile activity.

And how we miss them! Much as we like our kids to acquire standard grammar and pronunciation, the learning stages provide endless entertainment.

My kids also eat "lollipop chicken" - for the same reason!
And my daughter says "soong" instead of "soon" and I cannot convince her otherwise! Now my son says it too! (Because obviously, a 5 1/2 yr. old big sister knows WAY more than some old Ima!)

This is such a sweet thread! My son also says "bisgusting" he also lit a "benorah" on Chanukah! He even played with a neighbor who he called "B'Chaim" for a while. He also called cookies "dooties" whenever we would pass the bakery he would aske me to take him in to get his free cookie by saying: "Bakey. Dootie!"
The best word, which we just loved was "deek-uh-buh" That meant diaper! He is long toilet trained, but we still use that word with his little sister.
