Excellent article, thanks for posting.
I vaguely remeber learning in Tanya about there being a way to accustom a child to do mitzvos (the obligation of Chinuch in a nutshell) yet avoid the problem of "Mitzvos anashim melumadah," where mitzvos are done merely by rote.
From the article, it seems that we must teach a child:
- Kabalas Ol
- Keep mitzvos
- Make "Jewish" part of the psyche
