We got a couple of sets of silver-plate for our wedding. We returned the ones we could and kept the ones from the out-of-town cousins, which we enjoy very much. I polish it twice a year, but it could really use more polishing (I HATE polishing silver and I have a ton of it.)
Sterling silver is soooooo expensive - I was looking at some in Macy's when I was a kallah and almost started hyperventilating when I saw the price - but it's really nice. We would have been happy to receive some as a wedding gift, but no one obliged.

For weekday we use the cheap sets we got as wedding gifts and for Shabbos we use a beautiful stainless steel set that my DH bought me for our anniversary. I chose it and I really like it. Its shiny and matte.

I got silverware from my grandmother.
You have to keep it in box that doesn't let the silver tarnish and then you only have to polish it once a year.
And another thing is to dry it right away so it doesn't stain.
I don't use it every day.
