We have visited several times!
There is a Chabad, Chabad of Maine. there is also an orthodox synagogue, shaarei tefilah.
As for kosher food, you can get tons of it that it is pre-packaged, bring your own meat if you want beef, lamb, or cold cuts. You can get OU-Glatt chicken breasts in the portland area at whole foods and trader joe's.
You can get non-chalav yisrael products, milk, ect, but there isn't a wide selection of cheeses (so bring your own), plus no other cy-products. Ask the chabad if they'd be willing to stock any for you/sell any to you. They are very nice people.
-casco bay ferry (amazing!), you can go to peak's and great diamond island
-beaches, including crescent beach and willard's beach, there is also a great beach in bath
-bowdoin and portland museums of art
-art walks on fridays
-lots of lakes in the area, if you want to rent a house on one
-old orchard beach, it's like a carnival-type town
-kennebunkport (beautiful town, the George Bush's summer there)
-there is an observatory
-the eastern prom is a great place to drive around! lots of beautiful old mansions and great place to walk around by the sea
-ll bean and outlets in freeport
-the clam festival (no, you don't have to eat clams) in yarmouth
-the cumberland fair in the fall
-two lights in cape elizabeth
-beach-to-beacon road race
