As some of you may know from my previous posts, we are probably moving down to North Miami Beach, Florida in a few months (although we still have not found a place nor truly settled on NMB vs. Miami Beach, Hollywood, etc.)
We did a pilot trip to FL last month and were told by residents that NMB is not safe to walk around in at night. Now, with the exception of a visit to the mikvah (a few streets down from where I live now), I don't usually walk around at night, anyway. But it's still not a comforting thought to be told that, by numerous people.
Right now I live up north (Boston) and we went out for both the sedarim, as we've done every year so far since we got married.
We walked home at 1am or later both nights. I was wondering, what do people do in NMB? What about in other communities? If it's a big holiday and there's "lots" of Jews walking around at that hour, is it safe to go out then? Or does everyone resign themselves to having the seder/night meals at home with just family and some people from their condo complex?
Just wondering... please chime in with what it's like where you live/other communities you know of and places in south Florida in particular.
Thanx!!

I am in NMB now, and we take walks at night after the meals all the time. I think it is very safe. Like everywhere else, you never know when some nut can strike. We are in danger everywhere, if we choose to think like that.

I have no experience with North Miami Beach but I wonder if those people meant it's not safe to walk out alone? In many areas where its not so safe to walk alone, to walk with ones husband, or in a group, is perfectly fine.

I live in NMB and I usually don't walk out by myself at night. You ask about the Seder night. Seder night is Leil Shimorim there is nothing to worry about Hashem gives us extra Shmira. I did go out at 1:30am to take out the garbage by myself and did see people walking the streets.

The first time I was there I was 18 and naive and vacationing with a couple of friends. What can I say? Hashem protected the stupid. We did really stupid things late at night having no idea about the crime rate.
Next winter I went with my sister and we were walking from one hotel to another a few blocks down in an upscale neighborhood at 1:30am motzei shabbos. We were mugged. It was horrible. They fought with us, took our stuff, and I had PPSD for a long time after that.
Next time I went I visited my friends relatives in the area and asked about going out at night. I was told even a group of 10 women together can't go out at night. She said if she ever has to drive at night to Mikvah, she calls her dh on the drive home so he can be waiting outside when she pulls up because ppl were murdered in their own driveways l"a.
May Hashem protect us.
I love that place. But please be careful at night.

NMB certainly is not the safest. But especially times like after the seder, there generally are people walking around. You still have to be pretty vigilant, but certainly it doesn't deter most people from walking at night with their families.
OTOH, in terms of things like Mikvah, I don't know what happens there currently, but I do know that for a while, women who needed to go on shabbos walked as a group with a female police escort. I don't know if it's still the case.

I grew up in NMB (about a million years ago) and it's so sad for me to hear this.

Hialeah, Opa Locka, and Miami Gardens are way less safe than the Jewish areas of Hollywood or NMB.
