What time of day is best to travel from NY to NJ (and back) to avoid most of the SI traffic/ construction?

Is it better to travel in morning, afternoon, evening, late at night? Sundays or weekdays?

As long as you avoid major rush hour times, 7-9 Am 3-5 PM, it usually isn't too bad.

Try and go before the school year starts again, traffic is usually lighter than anyhow.

Take the lower level of the expressway, and if there is a lot of traffic you can always go on the service road which runs parallel to the expressway, you need to get off at the first exit, which you can only do from the lower level.

You can also check traffic cams before you leave.

But even as someone that travels that way everyday, there is not always rhyme and reason to why there is more traffic one day at the same time, as another day.

Good lUck

http://webcam.mta.info/mta3/index.jsp this link has all the NYC bridges operated by MTA

http://nyctmc.org/multiview2.php Lots of traffic cams in NYC including along the SIE. I just noticed that a lot of the SI ones happen to be inactive, probably due to all the construction that is going on there, Keep in mind, you can see no traffic, and then by the time you get there, something could have happened. Also the working cameras are probably after the major construction, so while it may be moving there, until you get to that point may take a while..
