I make jokes about my conversion because, well, I'm a comedian. But aside from that, the truth about my conversion is pretty boring. I am a Jew for the same reason that I am a [black person]: I have no choice; I just am.
Observant Judaism requires that, 100 times a day, I stop and say: "Gee, sure am glad I woke up. Sure am grateful that I have water and food and wine, etc."
Since it is not possible to be grateful and angry at the same time, making the blessing with a grateful heart guarantees I'll have a happier day.
And I do.
For observant Jews, the most important holiday begins at sundown on Friday evenings--the Sabbath. It is the only holiday that's an actual commandment. How can you not love a religion with a mandatory weekly celebration?
I could no more give up Judaism than I could a part of my body.
Wait, I had to do that to become a Jew.
Aaron Freeman is a comedian and publishes comics at TheComicTorah.com.
