Yeah, I'd wait for the husband to mention it first & if your new friend asks you about it, I'd just say something like, "oh I thought his name sounded familiar but I wasn't sure b/c it was so long ago & I dated so many guys back in my single days that it's really hard to remember every guy I went out with"...

It's not exactly the same but my brother was begging me to go out with a best friend of his. I can't remember why it never happened but this guy was mentioned to me over and over again. I saw him many times, in my house too. Well it turns out our daughters are in the same class and I really like his wife. Our daughters became friends and I shmooz with the wife alot. If I had actually dated him in the end I wouldn't get too close to the wife though, I don't think that would be fair to him, especially if it hadn't been him that broke it off.
