No pacis here, they were discouraged for breastfeeding babies at the time (I don't know what the current recommendations are). However, a baby's need to suck far outweighs his/her need for food, so babies tend to suck on anything near their mouths.
My baby figured out how to suck her fingers around five months. It was wonderful! The ability to self-soothe is very important. She never lost her fingers, dropped them from her crib, or needed me to follow her around with extras.
She naturally stopped sucking her thumb shortly after weaning at 30 months.
