My place of employment has a strict rule against boss/employee gift exchange. They think it has too much potential for ethical problems and conflicts of interest.

I see the point of reciprocating if it's a personal gift. I would think giving a gift in exchange for a bonus is inappropriate, but I will remain open-minded because each workplace might be different.
