OP, you should read these and those listed above, or at least excerpts, to see what gets read on this topic. Behatzlacha! I hope it is therapeutic for you.

In Flowers for Algernon, Charlie is not mentally ill, he is [crazy], with an IQ below 70.

And the Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime has a first-person narrator on the autism spectrum. Again, not mental illness. It's very interesting, though -- I read it in 11th grade lit class.

OP, does your husband know that you are writing this book? And how does he feel about it?

I am aware that some books I mentioned do not deal with mental illness per se, but with other conditions that are not physical disabilities. I don't mean to offend anyone.

I would, just make sure your info is correct. Also know that you'll prob get lots of love & hate mail for such a book.

If it is written well, yes!

Beat me to it.

A good author can make any subject matter readable. And a lousy one can make the most fascinating topic tedious.

If I were you OP, I would actually refrain from reading anything else if the writing is still flowing well....I find if I read something similar, I have a hard time being creative and I end up working hard not to imitate. It's much more forced and less natural.

After you write, read others, and use it to help edit and polish your story.

Hatzlacha!
