Has anyone read this by Eve Harris? It's longlisted for Man Booker Prize.

No, and having skimmed the link I'm trying to decide if it's worth the heartburn to see if our library system has it and put in on hold.

No, but thanks for the link. I usually enjoy the books that are on the Man Booker prize list, and I'd like to try this one.

Chani Kaufman, isn't she the little girl who edited the BY Times when she was in junior high in Targum's series?

I read it. I want to know what research she actually did, because... oy.

Well written. I can see why it got a longlist nomination.

I read somewhere the author taught in a frum school and based her book on this. Rolling Eyes

She did. She also thanks "frum friends" in the acknowledgments, but I think that must have only been basic factual things. The main character is the most impossibly sheltered, naive frum girl in Hendon. But, miraculously, one of the few spirited ones.

Just finished it, it was written really well but otherwise I felt it was just ok.

Read on my kindle.

Interesting, especially as the background is rather familiar, but no real message that I could see. Maybe it is more written as a cultural work for a non Jewish audience, so doesn't really have much to say except 'oh, that's familiar', to most of us.

Although it is much less judgemental and negative than other similar books, like disobedience, or Naomi Regan.

Apparently, it was written by a Jewish, non frum teacher in a frum girl's high school in NW London.

I agree with what frumdoc said.

just finished reading it... definitely less chilul H' than other similar books, but some things just dont add up to me. I read some opinions on it and most nonjews wrote positively that they got an insight into a different culture etc. not terribly bashing which is good I guess Wink

My immediate reaction to this old bumped thread:
No, she has the title wrong. It's The Secret Life of Chani Greenberg.
Then I reread and tried the library network again. It's available and I put it on hold to send to my library. (I looked at other locations. Some are in real white bread American suburbs.)
Guess I'll stock up on the Tums Twisted Evil

I think you're talking about two different books.

I agree. Like when she was found in Brent cross by lingerie as if it was a crime 🙄

Or when she spoke to her chasson on the phone three days before her wedding
