Watermelon!! Hi!! Nice to "see" ya here.

(Guess what- I just got back from the gym and it was great :-))

My fave brand of marinara is Frescorti- which used to have another name. But they just changed the recipe so it's not as tasty but it's healthier. I still like it, but not as much as the old less-healthy version.

Frescorti
Barilla

or whatever is on special.

I still cannot find a marinara that tastes as good as the one my grandfather used to buy in Sainsburys (UK) that was the best!

I guess you are a little saucy ~ we'll have to take that up elsewhere

I make my own sauce too ... but it's never a thick marinara ~ it's light with roma tomatoes, olive oil & garlic

America's Choice is the best (formerly known as Pathmark) but Shop Rite is a close second.

Another vote for Frescoti (however you spell it)... the only marinara the whole family agrees on

Fresotti and Barilla have pieces in them. That's why my kids won't eat them. Also, Barilla spoils after a few days while other brands could easily last weeks in the fridge.

Interestingly, the Francesco Rinaldi and Shoprite marinara sauces are the same I think. But, the smaller bottle is not kosher- you need to look for the bigger size. It has an OU on it.

We like Gefen the best. Frescorti and most of the others have 'pieces' in them that my kids can't stand. Gefen is nice and smooth.

EMERIL's!!! You must try it. It's absolutely delicious!! and you can buy it at any grocery, not just the jewish ones. I use it for lasagna and pizza, usually mixed with don pepino, but we eat it plain on noodles - so so good! It does have a few big pieces, but not many and I just take them out.

Personally, I think all jarred sauces are pretty awful. They all contain sugar and are very sweet. I'm a bit of a purist and since it's so easy to make your own I tend to do that.

Dice a medium sized onion and saute in a little olive oil until golden and wilted. Grate several cloves of garlic and add in to the pan/pot. Add in a lg. can of crushed tomatoes and a small can of diced tomatoes (without any added seasonings), salt and pepper. Add a little dry red wine (never add sweet wine) and simmer gently for about 1/2 hr., stirring occasionally to prevent the sauce from sticking to the bottom. Tear a bunch of fresh basil leaves and add to the sauce about 10 min before using. You're done. And this freezes beautifully. And you can make huge batches and freeze in smaller containers or heavy duty quart sized plastic bags.

1. Frescorti
2. Barilla (it's a drop sweeter/more artificial than #1)

DelGrosso marinara sauce has no added sugar. It is all natural: Imported Whole Italian Plum Tomatoes, Imported Olive Oil, Crushed Tomatoes, Fresh Onions, Sea Salt, Garlic, Basil, Black Pepper, and Parsley.

Thanks everyone. Lots of great suggestions depending on what I need it for.

In this case, I think a smooth sauce without pieces is best so I think I'll go with the Gefen.

Never thought I'd get so many great responses to this simple question.
