My 5 yr old recently starting making spitting, blowing noices & "clucking" type noises with his mouth throughout the day. It's occasionally affecting his talking. He didn't do it's when he was younger. Is this a normal phase? Or something I should be concerned about and discuss with his doctor? It's been going on at least a month now, so I've thought about giving his dr a call soon if it continues.

so does mine. and he hums. constantly. his OT said it's sensory and we should get him an electric toothbrush for input to his mouth.
that's just my experience, there may be other reasons for your son doing it.

It could definitely be sensory seeking, or maybe even a comfort thing.
See if you can notice when he is doing it during the day. Is he bored, nervous, working hard on a project? Is it just non stop? Does he enjoy chewing on things, or putting non food items in his mouth just to see how they feel?

I did it when I was young and my patents didn't get me any help. I have mild OCD and 1 ds who does this has Tourette's. don't call attention to it but do ask about a referral to someone
