I do not like to patchke with desserts
im not such a good baker
my dh does not like chocolatey desserts
my kids dont like cake for dessert
I dont like to make home made ice creams with a lot of eggs..

so...I usually serve sorbet, which makes everyone happy but is expensive
or I make something fruit.

any other ideas??

I like tinned pineapple! It also is good for digesting food apparently.
Later on you could have coffee with some biscuits.

Cut up fresh fruit.

Try some dates, or nuts (or both.)

I keep pospsicles in the freezer. (I am limiting my dessert making and consumption, so I just try not to have anything around that will tempt me. They inexpensive.

Here is a recipe I tried last week. It tastes wonderful. I would suggest though, not doing the syrup. Just sprinkle it with the spices:

Instead of the syrup, in the book, the author suggests to use tehini sauce.

What if one flavored water, partially froze it, and ice-crushed it in a food processor into snow? Would that count as home made sorbet? If A syrup were drizzled over it?

I guess there are machines sold to do this easily.

The Cuisinart one is sixty dollars. That's ten commercial sorbet boxes.

One reviewer said you had to leave the sorbet that you made in the freezer for a few hours, to get it firm enough.

I like agave syrup, because while as fattening as any other sugar, it does not cause an insulin spike in the blood.

These machines may be loud when they operate.

Make a fruit smoothie (you don't need to add dairy to it). Freeze it until it's slushy, and run it through the food processor. Freeze it again until it's half frozen, and then process it until it looks like a milkshake. Freeze again, and take out of the freezer a few minutes before serving. It will be perfect.

I like to make a strawberry lemonade smoothie and turn it into sorbet. It's very fancy, and wonderful in the summer. You can buy frozen berries year round. If you want it creamy, add some ripe banana or parve whip.

Question: why do you "need" dessert that's complicated? If you put out some fruit and nuts... will that satisfy? It's good for your health and your diet...

I'm with you, OP
dh and I are watching our weight so we dont want any dessert. but it brings my kids such joy to have dessert on shabbos, so I like to provide it for them.
they dont like baked goods. they dont see fruit as something special because they have that all week long.
I dont serve jello or pudding because they tend to play with it and its disgusting.

I've been making a variation on the 'ice cream sundae pie' in the purple spice & spirit cookbook, but I use a premade crust and the parve soy creamy ice cream from trader joes. its better and cheaper than the stuff in the kosher grocery. kids love it and I'm not tempted at all. its not even such a pain if you remember to let the ice cream thaw a bit.

they also like italian ices, which I buy on sale. total garbage, imo, but once a week wont kill them.

I might try the smoothie-sorbet idea. thanks.

Baked apples? Poached pears? Practically effortless and much healthier than typical desserts. Also I freeze bananas then run them through the blender. 1 ingredient banana ice cream.

EASY strawberry ice cream: Put frozen strawberries in a food processor. Add cream or pareve equivalent and sugar, blend. Use enough so blades of food processor move. If not creamy enough add more cream or milk (or soy milk). If not sweet enough add more sugar. DELICIOUS!

If not using right away. Scoop into serving dish or individual dishes and freeze or put in fridge.

You could also just use juice. Use enough so that the blades of the food processor move.

Easiest ice cream recipe ever:

Whip up one richs whip. Stir in one can pie filling (any kind). freeze. Thaw a bit before serving. Can put in pie crust before freezing.

Best with pies that dont have pieces, but they work good too.

OK here's an absolutely non-patchke, non-bake dessert kids like: Jell-O with fruits.

I like putting fresh or tinned fruits before jelly liquid sets.
Takes all but 2 minutes.
