my baby is 5 months old. he used to nurse for 10 min at a time. now he refuses to latch off. I dont know if he is hungry or not. how do I know if he is ready for food? or should I just let him nurse for longer periods of time?

It could be he just wants the comfort, babies suck differently when it is comfort versus hunger. when it is comfort it is usually 4 sucks to a swallow.
Why not try him on food and see if he wants it? Also if you let him suck for longer how long will he suck for? How long has this been going on for? Is it possible he is going through a growth spurt and is telling you to produce more milk for him?
Good luck!

1stimer I agree maybe your baby is hungry for food try cereal mixed with breastmilk formula water whatever.
Does your baby take a pacifier?

monitor his weight for a few weeks - you'll see if he's not gaining.

I've been sick for the past few days and at the same time it's when my 5 month old decided to start eating every 2-3 hours again at night. I think it might be because I'm producing less milk due to being ill.... can that be possible? Anyone else have this occur to them?

My baby has basically always nursed one side for 5 minutes.
I think they empty out a breast in around 7 minutes, but a lot of babies nurse longer for comfort, or sucking 'fun'. So fi you're baby wants to nurse longer, he may just want to suck, cuz not much will be coming out after 10 minutes!
If you do only one side, try the other...that'll help if he's hungry.
good luck!
