My 6 year old son loves when I read him chapter books (ie. short novels). The problem is that there seem to be very few that are age appropriate with Jewish content. So far, he loves PJ Pepperjay by Yehudis Backenroth. I have searched online for similar types of books but I haven't had much luck. Any suggestions?

When reading aloud, the content doesn't have to be exactly his age level; the vocabulary can be a bit higher and he can understand the words via context when heard.

That being said, The Stupendous Adventures of Shragi and Shia may be up his alley.

Let me take a look at my library and see what else I can think of that may be good. I don't want to ruin book series that he may come to read on his own in a year or two Wink

What about Savta Simcha?

Also my DS loves short stories - the best book I have is Riding the Tracks

We have read the stories over and over and he doesn't get bored of them

Thanks for the suggestions - The Stupendous Adventures of Shragi and Shia seems perfect for my son. We already have Riding the Tracks and we've read through the stories several times. It's a great book, but my son keeps asking for chapter books. I think he likes the longer, more complex story lines. If there are any other suggestions, please let me know! I feel like there should be more books geared to this age group!

I was also thinking of Savta Simcha, though it's not a novel (now that I think about it, the Stupendous Adventures isn't really either). But for some reason, I like to hoard "series" for my kids as independent readers so they will continue to pick out books from my shelf they know they will enjoy...it's a meshugaas of mine! But it is definitely a great series that that age will enjoy.

The Dov Dov series is also good.

A book like One Step at a Time by Rachel Stein has some good short stories in there too.

The Menucha Fuchs books are perfect for this age -- as independent readers though. They are short stories written in chapter book format, and it makes it exciting for a first grader to independently read, but I'm not sure they are as captivating when read out loud.

Kid's Speak I would strongly recommend screening if you choose to do that. A lot of the stories are scary, and not appropriate for even older kids IMO.

Gemarakup series I would say is a bit older, as is Cheery Bim Band, Burksfield Bike Club, Junior Chaverim.

Devorah Doresh my 8 yo loves, not sure my 6.5 yo would enjoy as much.

I think this is an age without many books to read out loud because some of the kids are starting to read on their own so they migrate toward easier books.

Another option is the fun-to-read series of books, like One of a Kind Yanky (and other stories), The Great Potato Plan, The Marvelous Mix-Up: And other tales of Reb Shalom like some of them on here http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=as.....526BK

I just thought of a great one but no idea if you can buy it anymore: The Incredible Brocho Machine - I loved it as a kid and my kids found it at my parent's home and devoured it as well.

This may work: http://www.judaicapress.com/Ar......html

Not sure where you live,
but a great idea to try books and get plenty of them is to use a library,
There is a great one called
'the Library' it is located at 4306-17th avenue, 718-436-0098
They also sell used books, you can see some of them at
