For babies under 6 months you really should use a rectal (digital is easiest but you can't use on Shabbos and since they're so cheap, get a digital PLUS a glass one). Above that age, the EASIEST is an Exergen forehead (temporal) thermometer. They take two seconds and are pretty accurate. Still, for home use, you really don't need to know down to the decimal point, but rather if the kid has fever or not, right? In a doctor's office obviously they'll need highly accurate ones. Exergen is also good for yourself! So what I like to do is to swipe my baby and then swipe myself. This way I can see the disparity. I know I'm always about .2 degrees cooler than he is.
