Does anyone know if one who is laid off can collect unemployment while they are receiving (2 weeks) severance pay or if they have to wait until after severance ends?
Asking for a friend.

It probably depends on the state. Your friend should file a claim and see if they ask about severance pay

If it is severance, it is paid in a lump sum and you collect unemployment immediately.
If you we're given notice and weren't fired for two weeks, you collect on the first day of unemployment.
In my experience, most people,are given severance on their last day because employers don't want someone who is fired to continue working. However, there may be circumstances in which it truly is a situation in which the workers are given prior notice.
The test is whether a worker would be available to work in a new job.
