In our new house we need to put up blinds on all the windows. Anyone have any comments on aluminum vs. faux wood blinds? We have aluminum now and the kids have pretty much wrecked the ones in their rooms; I was thinking the faux wood would be more durable. They seem fairly comparable in price.
And what about for a sliding glass door? Kids seem to mess up the vertical blinds - do we have any other options?

I prefer the look of faux wood, however, I don't know about the durability.

I have faux wood. I have for about a year now, holding up just fine, very happy with it.

you cant bend faux wood like you can with aluminum, they cant run their hands up and down the blinds to here the noise. Id go for it.

Ugh... aluminum...
We had plastic until we replaced them with regular curtains- I'm too nervous about the strings.
Go with the 'wood.'

Do these blinds totally darken a room, or do you need heavy curtains as well for that?

I actually wanted to ask about that too... both of the children's rooms face west. In one of our kids rooms now, it faces west and there is still a lot of light coming in through the aluminum blinds.

Plastic blinds, esp. the inexpensive ones, may contain lead. There are lead-testing swabs on the market that you can use to test for lead content. Skip those.

It really depends on your decor, color scheme.

I just got these b4 Pesach for the kid's bedrooms. They are great! So quick and easy and neat looking. When thye were new they tended to pop back up a little bit when pulled down, but after a few weeks they settled in and work just fine. |
they only popped up by me when it was yanked a little too hard
I know- I love the idea of no strings- I wish they'd make all shades like that so easy, so safe, so neat & simple!

Those look neat but they would not help my kids go to sleep in the summer!

Yup.
And would wake them up too early in the morning.
I have electric alumium roller blinds outside of the window, and then a curtain for the beauty, inside.

I actually sell blinds so I know from customers. More people are happier with the faux wood than aluminum.
The faux wood is a little more expensive but it's more durable. There is a problem with small holes where the string goes thru, so it does not block out the sun 100%.

Chavamom, I meant that I got them replaced by regular curtains, not blinds.
Plastic has lead?? Isn't that illegal?
If you decided on blinds, go with the faux wood.
What I did was hang 2 layers of curtains. Sheer and opaque. Sheer closer to the window and opaque closer out into the room. Works wonderfully.

the guy who did my blinds said that hunter Douglas makes wood blinds where the holes are concealed.

Are u davka set on blinds. B/c they break and are a a pain to clean imo. I have them in my kitchen and dinette, but the rest of my home is draperies valances and sheers, some are gorgous and some more simple, these last way better ! and clean well etc

Hunter Douglas only makes real wood for way more than the faux costs.
