Try expedia or travelocity, then call the motels and see if they have any special rates that might be better. AAA gives discounts as well.

at the truck stops by highway entrances for each new state they have discount travel books ... with coupons ...

The truck stop guides are great but not always accepted. Some places make you come in in person and won't accept an advance reservation and of course reserve the right to refuse you if they have already filled up. In NJ not sure exactly what you will get also. Think seedy. But if it is a chain motel you should be fine.

did you find a motel?
When we were driving from NY down south, we just stopped in the area around when we wanted to retire and checked out different motels in that area for good rates.
The down side is one place we went to had dirty sheets...bleck!
