we will be visiting manhattan soon and I am looking to buy cosmetics and make up.I do not like department stores but more like a boutique style.any sggestions?

sephora is not a boutique style store you can try the mac store on the west side or the clarins store on madison ave in the hi 70s or 80s

Yeah, I'm really not sure where you're going to find a small intimate place in Manhattan.
There might be small places in the SOHO area, but I don't know anything about that.

I think sephora is very helpful and nice. I even call ahead to have the same salesperson help me each time!

If you want something small and boutique style, you'll have to come into Brooklyn. A lot of salons sell make up, but I don't know how full of a line they have. Like CM said, your best bet is Sephora. It's not huge like a dep't store, but it's small enough to get individual attention, and they are quite helpful. And you certainly can't beat their selection...every brand in every color and shade and then some.
